In mid-October, Google introduced Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to the world. This is the largest update to Google Analytics since 2012 when Universal Analytics was unveiled.

There is a lot of excitement with the direction Google is taking the product, but there are also a lot of questions due to the fundamental change with how GA4 collects and will report on data.

The new GA4 (Google Analytics 4) properties (previously called ‘App + Web’ properties) consolidate data from websites and mobile apps in a single set of reports, allowing users to perform cross-platform analysis. They achieve this by letting you collect data from your mobile app (using Firebase) and your website (using the Global Site Tag or Google Tag Manager).

The days of single session reporting are gone and GA4 is a step closer to closing the gap on cross-platform user journeys with a focus on user acquisition, retention, segmentation, and lifetime value.
